Anthropic Investors Eye Massive Returns Ahead of Potential $2 Trillion Listing
Early backers and venture capital firms holding shares in the AI leader stand to see their portfolios explode in value if the company goes public at its projected high valuation this year.

A projected valuation of two trillion dollars is expected for the public listing of the artificial intelligence company Anthropic this year. This figure represents the upper end of current market expectations and would mark one of the most significant financial events for the tech sector in recent history. The move would distribute substantial wealth among the firm's early stage and later stage investors. Even before the official stock debut, the stakes held by these backers already total billions of dollars at the company's most recent private market price.
According to data from Bloomberg, the value of these holdings varies significantly depending on when investors entered the picture. The current private market valuation stands at $965 billion. This figure serves as the baseline for calculating the current worth of shares held by various venture capital firms and individual entrepreneurs. The gap between their initial investment and this current valuation highlights the rapid growth of the AI sector.
Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive officer of Google, is among the earliest investors in the company. He participated in the Series A funding round in 2021. At that time, PitchBook data indicates the startup was valued at $461 million. Today, Schmidt holds approximately one percent of the company. Based on the current private valuation, his personal stake is worth nearly $10 billion.
Iconiq, a major investment outfit, took a massive late stage bet on Anthropic last year. The firm wrote a check for $6 billion when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That significant investment has since grown to a value of $17 billion. Analysts suggest this position has the potential to double in value if the IPO proceeds at the higher end of projected valuations.
Menlo Ventures has been a long term supporter of the AI lab. The firm led the Series D funding round and has invested more than $1 billion in the company over the course of its development. This cumulative investment now represents a stake worth $14 billion. The firm's leadership in the later funding stages has solidified its position as a major holder of equity in the company.
Sequoia entered the picture more recently, backing the AI lab for the first time earlier this year. At the time of this investment, the company was valued at $380 billion. The firm invested $3 billion to secure about one percent ownership. This late entry has already more than doubled the firm's investment, reflecting the steep appreciation of Anthropic's equity value in a short period.
Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, has also accumulated a significant position. The firm invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C round. Since then, it has funneled an additional $400 million into the company. This combined investment has resulted in a stake that is now worth billions of dollars. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures earlier this year to launch a new venture capital firm.
Spark Capital holds the only known board seat at Anthropic among venture capital firms. The firm invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round that attracted Sound Ventures. At that point, the company was valued at $5 billion. That initial position has ballooned more than ninetyfold. Today, Spark Capital's stake is valued at $7 billion, illustrating the extreme leverage available to early backers in the current AI market.
