Apple has placed a functional virtual iPod on the error pages of its Apple Music website to mark the 25th anniversary of the original device. The feature is not advertised. Users only encounter it when they navigate to a broken link or a non-existent page on the Apple Music site.
Below the standard page not found message, a prompt invites visitors to give this a spin instead. Selecting that option reveals an interactive replica of the classic MP3 player. The device includes a working click wheel and standard controls for navigation. Users can browse a library containing 1,029 playable tracks.
The music selection reflects the early 2000s era when the original iPod launched. The lineup includes artists such as Baha Men, blink-182, and Eminem. A UK-based writer for Engadget also reported seeing Daniel Bedingfield, The Fratellis, and Klaxons in the library. It is unclear if US users see the same artists. Each track plays for a maximum of 90 seconds.
The experience is described as somewhat buggy by early testers. Engadget recommends using a phone or tablet because the touch screen makes the controls feel more responsive than on a desktop computer. One writer had difficulty getting the virtual iPod to function at all on a desktop browser.
The interface mirrors the original hardware with sections for Playlists, Artists, Songs, and Settings. Notebook Check identified an additional hidden feature: the Breakout-style game Brick. This game was a secret extra on the first generation iPod. To access it, users must hold the center button on the About screen for a few seconds, replicating the original method.
The virtual iPod does not appear to require an active Apple Music subscription or account. Apple has not issued a formal statement explaining the inclusion of the feature. The original iPod was marketed with the slogan that it held 1,000 songs in your pocket, a claim that defined the product's initial impact on consumer technology.
The 1,029 tracks and the hidden game provide a functional tribute to the device's legacy. The error page remains the only known access point for the virtual player. Apple has not indicated when the feature might be removed or if it will be expanded to other platforms.
