A 36-year-old woman from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire died in the Bahamas after a strong current pulled her two sons away from a snorkeling site near the southern tip of Bimini. The Royal Bahamas Police Force confirmed she was swept into the water while trying to reach her sons, who were later rescued safely.
Police officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. When officers arrived, they learned she had already been transported to a local clinic for medical care. A doctor pronounced her dead at the facility despite resuscitation efforts.
The force stated that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after the woman was pulled from the water. Police opened an investigation into the sudden death on Tuesday and said they do not suspect foul play at this time. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
The family had been snorkeling together, with the woman’s husband and their two sons accompanying her. The current reportedly separated the children from the group first, prompting the mother to enter the water. A Foreign Office spokesperson said officials are in contact with local authorities and providing support to the family.
