The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne upgraded the medical status of independent MP Helen Haines on Saturday morning. Her condition changed from critical to serious but stable, marking the first improvement since she was airlifted to the facility on Monday. Haines, 65, suffered severe injuries when a car deliberately struck her outside her electorate office in Wangaratta, north-east Victoria. Both of her legs were amputated during treatment.
Police arrested 43-year-old Brendan Nugent shortly after the incident. They allege he drove his Toyota LandCruiser into the parliamentarian. He appeared in court facing three charges: dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. Prosecutors indicated that additional charges, potentially including attempted murder, could be filed.
Nugent’s legal representative cited "mental health concerns" for his client without providing specific details. Victoria Police, assisted by the Australian Federal Police, continue to investigate the motive. Investigators are assessing whether drug use or medication contributed to the event. Nugent’s family stated they were long-time friends of Haines.
Phil Haines, the MP’s husband, described the incident as "horrendous" on Wednesday. He reported that while his wife sustained major physical injuries, "her heart and her mind" remained "in good shape." Haines entered parliament in 2019 after working as a nurse and midwife. She is recognized for advocating stronger climate action.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese commented on the event soon after the attack. Speaking to ABC television, he noted a "rise in temperature" in Australian politics and observed there was "too much shouting, not enough discourse." The hospital has not scheduled a further public update on Haines' recovery.
