Meta’s AI eyewear is finding a new use case among outdoor enthusiasts who view the built-in cameras as a safety tool rather than just a social feature. A contributor to 9to5Google detailed how the hardware now functions as a personal dashcam for individuals running in traffic.

The practice began this summer when the user, who goes by Nick, took up running. Despite having no prior interest in the activity, Nick quickly encountered traffic hazards while crossing streets. Nick noted that drivers sometimes require evasive maneuvers, even at marked crosswalks. This experience prompted a search for a way to document potential accidents without the bulk of a traditional phone setup.

Holding a smartphone while running proved impractical, and pocket storage did not allow for quick access during a near miss. An armband holster also failed to provide fast enough retrieval for filming an incident. The solution was already in place, as Nick had been wearing the glasses on every run to film clips for Strava with health data overlays.

The workflow is now automatic. When a vehicle approaches a crossing, Nick holds down the camera button to begin recording. The device captures video in three-minute segments, ensuring coverage of the entire crossing. Once the user reaches the other side, they press the button again to stop the recording. The footage remains on the glasses until the device reconnects to a phone, at which point it syncs automatically.

Nick uses two specific models for this purpose: the Meta Nova and the Oakley Meta HSTN. The user stated that it takes less than a second to start capturing video when needed. Nick described the setup as a form of insurance, noting that the process is as effortless as it gets.

For runners considering the gear, Nick recommended the Oakley Meta HSTN for its tight fit and runner-focused style. For those on a budget, Nick suggested the unbranded Meta models, claiming there is no functional difference between them and the premium versions. For users preferring to avoid the Meta ecosystem, the Rokid AI Glasses were cited as the best alternative tested.

Nick acknowledged some criticism regarding the inclusion of cameras in eyewear. However, the user concluded that the utility of having a camera available outweighs the negative perceptions, stating they would be unlikely to choose a new pair without this feature today.
