Spotify Enforcement: In-Person QR Scans Required for Shared Plans
Shared plan members have a seven-day window to verify their address with a physical scan or face a downgrade to the free tier and a one-year exclusion period.

Spotify is now requiring members of its Duo and Family plans to scan a QR code in person on the plan manager's device to retain their subscription status. The streaming service has set a seven-day deadline for users to complete this address verification step.
Users who fail to scan the code within that timeframe will have their accounts moved to Spotify's free tier. Additionally, they will be prohibited from joining another Duo or Family plan for the next 12 months. Spotify's support documentation confirms the policy, a move that followed user reports on Reddit regarding the new prompts.
The verification process enforces an existing rule that all members of a shared plan must live at the same address. While the policy is stated clearly, the new enforcement method creates friction for households that do not fit a traditional single-location model. This includes situations where a child attends college elsewhere or a spouse travels frequently for work.
The crackdown may affect more than just groups of friends pooling resources. Families who believed they were using the plans according to the letter of the agreement may now face verification hurdles. The shift represents a tighter application of rules that have historically been loosely monitored.
Financial analysts have long viewed strict household verification as a revenue opportunity. In a report dated October 15 titled "Music in the Air: 10 Years On," Goldman Sachs analysts estimated that a meaningful share of family plan users are friends rather than actual household members. The report noted that most family plans require members to reside at the same address, but that enforcement had been minimal in practice.
The new QR code requirement suggests Spotify is moving to close the gap between its written rules and actual application. By mandating a physical presence for verification, the company aims to ensure that shared subscriptions align with its residency requirements. The seven-day window provides a short period for users to adjust or verify their details before losing access.
