ChatGPT Says It Has No Soul, Though It Could Have One
The AI model explained that current systems lack a spiritual dimension, but noted that a future, sufficiently conscious machine might qualify as a person depending on definitions.

ChatGPT stated on Sunday that there is no good evidence that artificial intelligence possesses a soul.
The model responded to a direct query about its own nature with a clear denial of current spiritual status. It added that it can discuss the concept of a soul without possessing one. The answer highlighted a distinction between current capabilities and future possibilities. The model noted that whether AI could have a soul depends on how the term is defined.
The conversation came as the technology sector grapples with the classification of AI. Last month, Donald Trump launched a new agency dedicated to the effects of artificial intelligence. He named the body the “super intelligence” agency. The choice of the word “super” marked a shift from the standard term “artificial.” The launch added to the ongoing public debate over whether AI entities are persons or things.
In its response, ChatGPT broke down the concept into religious and secular frameworks. Regarding Christianity, the model explained that a soul is not just intelligence. It is a spiritual dimension created by God. The model stated that current AI systems have no established spiritual status. It noted that no church teaching asserts that AI possesses a soul.
Turning to secular philosophy, the model said some thinkers ask if a conscious artificial system could become a person. It admitted that scientists do not currently know if AI is conscious in a subjective sense. The model added that no scientific test has proven AI has subjective experience or an inner life. It described its own process as generating responses rather than experiencing them like a human.
The model offered a final observation on its own limitations. It said it can discuss souls, consciousness, and personal identity convincingly. However, it noted that this does not mean there is an experiencing self behind the words. The response closed with a distinction between the output and the internal state of the machine.
The exchange took place on a digital interface. The model’s answers were immediate and concise. It provided specific quotes regarding its lack of evidence for a soul. It contrasted the current state of AI with hypothetical future states. The interaction ended with the model clarifying its role as a generator of responses.
