Middle East Strategy: Third Carrier Departs
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the deployment as 21 million Americans cast ballots ahead of the Nov. 3 election.

A third U.S. aircraft carrier is moving into the Middle East region. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth authorized the deployment on Thursday. The move places three major naval assets in the area as military planners prepare for potential conflict with Iran.
Sources familiar with joint U.S. and Israeli war planning indicate that the two nations are coordinating for a possible strike after the American midterm elections. Hegseth recently visited Israel to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss these operational timelines.
President Donald Trump is expected to hold off on major military actions until after Nov. 3. Analysts suggest this timing is designed to prevent a spike in oil prices that could influence voter behavior before ballots are cast.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated that Tehran is ready for both diplomatic talks and war. The U.S. and Israel possess the capability to inflict heavy damage, yet Iran has shown no indication of making major concessions. Instead, Tehran is demanding formal control of the Strait of Hormuz and the withdrawal of American troops from the region.
Voting activity in the United States is accelerating. Nearly 21 million Americans have already voted by mail or in person, according to the University of Florida's Election Lab. This total increased by approximately 2 million in a single day. Early turnout in key battleground states is higher than during the previous midterm cycle.
Political analysts caution against using early figures as a definitive forecast for final results. Data indicates that Democrats are voting early at higher rates than Republicans, while unaffiliated voters are also participating. Republicans historically tend to turn out on Election Day rather than in the weeks leading up to it.
In related legal developments, a federal magistrate judge ordered Trump to sit for a deposition in his $10 billion defamation suit against the BBC. The judge stated that Trump must comply with court rules or face sanctions. The lawsuit centers on a Panorama broadcast from late October 2024 that allegedly edited his Jan. 6 speech to make it appear he incited a violent siege of Congress.
Trump has described the broadcast as false, misleading, and defamatory under Florida law. The BBC, which apologized for the editing, is seeking to understand Trump's state of mind during the speech. Attorneys for the network note that more than 200 Jan. 6 defendants said the speech motivated them. The BBC is also requesting details on how Trump has profited since returning to the White House.
Consumer prices remain a focal point for voters. While some items have become cheaper, overall grocery prices have risen due to higher labor costs, tariffs, and energy prices tied to the conflict with Iran. Ground beef cost $6.79 per pound last month, an 85% increase over a decade, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Eggs fell to $2.27 per dozen after reaching a record $6.23 in March 2025. Butter averaged $3.96 in September, a 17.3% decrease from a year earlier. Coffee remains 44% higher than two years ago.
