Los Angeles fans saw their local teams trade blows in a sluggish contest that ended 24-9 in favor of the Rams. The victory marks the first time the Rams have won back-to-back games this season, improving their record to 4-4. For the Chargers, the loss extends a winless start that dates back to the 2000 season.
The Rams did not manage a single first down until the final moments of the first half. They trailed 9-3 at that point, having gained just 24 yards on their first 15 plays. This sequence marked the first time in Sean McVay’s career that his team went without a first down on their initial five drives. The Rams finally moved the ball on a 40-yard completion to Tutu Atwell.
With 19 seconds left in the first half, Kyren Williams ran in untouched for the first touchdown of the game. The Rams continued their momentum after halftime. Blake Corum gained 55 yards on a long drive that concluded with a 23-yard rushing score. This was followed by an 18-yard touchdown pass to Puka Nacua late in the third quarter.
Matthew Stafford finished the game with 157 passing yards and one touchdown. Nacua added 11 receptions for 80 yards and a score. Corum rushed for 73 total yards. The Rams defense also played a key role, with Quentin Lake returning an interception 45 yards to set up the opening field goal.
The Chargers offense showed some improvement after their bye week, accumulating 295 yards. Justin Herbert passed for 257 yards, but he also threw two interceptions. He has thrown an interception in all seven games this season. Mike McDaniel, who retains play-calling duties, called two successful flea-flickers in the second quarter to help the team score a field goal.
Injuries affected both rosters. For the Chargers, linebacker Daiyan Henley suffered a shoulder injury in the first quarter but returned to the game. Safety Derwin James, who has a hamstring issue, missed his fourth consecutive game and was placed on injured reserve on Saturday. For the Rams, cornerback Jaylen Watson injured his shoulder early in the second half and did not return. He had previously missed a game with a dislocated shoulder. Cornerback Trent McDuffie also injured his back in the second half while returning from a groin injury.
The two teams will both return to action on Sunday. The Chargers will host the Houston Texans at home. The Rams will travel to Washington to face the Commanders.
