The gunfire erupted shortly after the final whistle of the 85th Magic City Classic, leaving nine people on the ground in the 400 block of Graymont Avenue West in Birmingham.
Birmingham police confirmed that one victim died from their injuries. Eight others sustained wounds, with one survivor in critical condition and the remaining seven in stable condition as of early Sunday, Nov. 1. Officers responded to the scene at 7:50 p.m. local time on Saturday, Oct. 31.
Police Chief Michael Pickett stated that the shooting began after the game ended and took place largely outside the stadium property. Vendors were operating along the street at the time. Officers recovered multiple firearms at the scene and detained one individual, who was taken to police headquarters for questioning.
As of Sunday morning, authorities had not announced formal charges or publicly identified the suspect. The identities of the nine victims also remained unconfirmed. Investigators requested any video footage of the incident through an online evidence portal, noting that contributors could remain anonymous.
The FBI and other law enforcement agencies assisted with the investigation. No officers or first responders were injured. Police suspended all remaining tailgating activities and directed the crowd to leave the stadium property.
Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin condemned the violence and pledged that the city would pursue justice. He described the event as a tradition rooted in the family values of historically Black colleges and universities. Alabama A&M University defeated Alabama State University 31-28 in the final score.
