Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr faces a defining Saturday against No. 1 Miami, a contest that could determine both the Fighting Irish’s College Football Playoff chances and his standing in the upcoming NFL Draft. The Irish enter the game ranked No. 11, holding a single loss to No. 9 BYU. They currently project as the final team to make the playoff field, leaving no margin for error.

Carr has maintained consistent production throughout his career, completing 67% of his passes while throwing 18 touchdowns against one interception. His 82.7 Quarterback Rating places him eighth in the nation, adjusted for the quality of competition. However, his performance in the lone high-quality matchup this season raised concerns. Against BYU, Carr completed just 55% of his attempts, a career low. He faced his most pass attempts in a single game, throwing 49 times, and missed 22 passes.

The struggles were most evident in the middle of the contest. During a stretch spanning the second and third quarters, Carr connected on only seven of 17 passes. That inefficiency allowed the Cougars to build a double-digit lead in Provo. BYU fields one of the strongest passing defenses in college football, limiting opponents to 5.5 yards per attempt, which ranks second in the sport. The result has cast a shadow over the junior’s status as the program’s most prominent quarterback in decades.

Carr’s numbers show a stark divergence when facing ranked opponents. Against unranked teams, he completes 69% of his throws for 10.0 yards per attempt. Against ranked foes, those figures drop to 61% completion and 6.6 yards per attempt. The difference in volume is also telling. In games against unranked opponents, Carr averages 23.1 attempts per game. That number jumps to 33 attempts when the defense is ranked, forcing him to throw more often as the running game loses effectiveness.

The offense showed other cracks in Provo. Carr completed only 30% of his passes traveling more than 10 yards downfield. He was outplayed by BYU dual-threat quarterback Bear Bachmeier, while Notre Dame receivers failed to create separation against the Cougars’ defensive backs. These issues have fueled questions about whether Carr can elevate his game against elite competition at the professional level.

Saturday’s opponent presents a unique opportunity despite its top national ranking. Miami boasts the No. 1 rushing defense, but its passing defense ranks No. 122 in the country. The Hurricanes allow 251.9 passing yards per game. While this is partly because opponents throw more often against their elite run defense, Miami still allows 7.1 yards per attempt, a middling figure. North Carolina’s Billy Edwards Jr. exploited this weakness last week, completing 82% of his passes for 341 yards and four touchdowns. Florida State and Pittsburgh also gained significant passing yards against the Hurricanes recently.

Carr is currently listed as the No. 10 overall prospect in the CBS Sports NFL Draft Rankings. A strong performance could make him the first Notre Dame quarterback selected in the first round since Brady Quinn in 2007. He would also be the first top-10 pick at the position since Rick Mirer in 1993. Last season, Carr went 0-2 against College Football Playoff teams. With a thinner roster this year, the Irish must win to stay alive, and Carr must throw with greater efficiency to save his draft stock.
