The Baltimore Ravens will start an undrafted rookie on Thursday.

Joe Fagnano, who has never started a game in the NFL, is expected to take the field against the Pittsburgh Steelers. He is the first choice because star quarterback Lamar Jackson is out for at least a month and backup Tyler Huntley is reportedly out for the season with turf toe.

The team’s depth chart changed quickly this week. The Ravens practiced on Tuesday with two new quarterbacks, Austin Reed and Kedon Slovis, whom they signed since Monday. Despite adding these players, the franchise does not have a clear path to winning the remainder of the schedule.

Reporters Kyle Goon and Giana Han discussed the team's options in a recent analysis. Han noted that if the Ravens trade for a quarterback, they need someone who can keep the team competitive so Jackson can return later. She said the new quarterback must be able to get the ball out quickly due to offensive line struggles. He does not need to be flashy, just capable of operating the offense.

Goon identified Tyson Bagent of the Chicago Bears as the most desirable trade target because of his prior experience with offensive coordinator Declan Doyle. However, Bagent lacks mobility and has nine interceptions against a lower touchdown total. Other options like Marcus Mariota and Carson Wentz are entrenched on their current teams, and veteran free agents carry injury risks.

The decision to tank for a better draft pick is complicated by the team's culture and current roster. The Ravens last picked in the top 10 in 2016. Veteran players like Derrick Henry and Calais Campbell are in the final stages of their careers and may lack patience for a losing season. Han believes the team should keep its draft capital to prepare for uncertainty regarding Jackson's future contract.

If the team continues to compete, it must improve its offensive line and reduce penalties. The defense has forced only eight turnovers, a number matched by only six other teams. Kicker Jake Moody must step in for Tyler Loop. Goon suggested Derrick Henry is the only likely trade candidate, as he is on pace for 1,000 yards, but such a move would cost a second-round pick and leave the team without a lead back if Jackson returns.
