Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut is recovering from a stroke at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore. His office announced the news on Sunday, noting that the 53-year-old senator is responding well to treatment.
Murphy began experiencing numbness in his arm on Saturday afternoon while attending his son’s hockey game. Staff took him to a local hospital, where medical tests confirmed he had suffered a stroke. He was subsequently transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring.
Allison Herwitt, Murphy’s chief of staff, provided the initial details in a statement. She said the senator is expected to make a full recovery. Murphy has been a visible face in the Democratic Party this year, serving as a campaign surrogate for candidates during the midterm elections.
He has positioned himself as a foreign policy expert and a critic of executive branch authority. Recently, Murphy traveled on a multistop tour of the Middle East. Following that trip, he warned that President Trump would significantly escalate the war against Iran after the midterm elections concluded.
Murphy is one of several lawmakers to face health issues this year. Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky spent months in hospitalization and rehabilitation. Rep. Tom Kean of New Jersey was absent from the Capitol for an extended period while treating depression.
In 2022, three other prominent Democrats were hospitalized for strokes. Those included Sen. Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, Sen. Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, and John Fetterman, who was then a Senate candidate.
