The fragility of religious coexistence in the Hashemite Kingdom was tested on Friday when armed men opened fire on a congregation gathered for a funeral. The attack, which resulted in the deaths of at least seven individuals, has been characterized by officials as an uncommon act of violence against the Christian minority in a nation that is predominantly Sunni Muslim. The incident occurred in the village of Hammoud, located within the Karak governorate, and has sent shockwaves through the country’s political and social landscape.

Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya provided a preliminary account of the tragedy during a press conference. He confirmed that 34 others sustained injuries in the shooting. Al-Faraya attributed the violence to a group of extremists, signaling that the state views the incident as a targeted ideological assault rather than a random crime. The public security directorate reported that the assailants breached the compound of a Greek Orthodox church before initiating their attack. Witnesses described the gunmen stepping out of a vehicle while a funeral procession was underway, leading to an immediate and intense exchange of gunfire.

Visual evidence from the state broadcaster, Al-Mamlaka, captured the chaotic moments of the assault. The footage shows three men, dressed in casual attire, armed with pistols and a long gun. They are seen firing from a street-level entrance before advancing into the church grounds. An eyewitness provided to the broadcaster stated that the attackers remained at the scene for approximately five minutes, firing without pause before fleeing. The witness estimated that between 150 and 200 people were present in and around the church, noting that the majority of the victims were seniors, ranging in age from 50 to 70 years old.

The Karak region, situated 110 miles south of the capital Amman, is known for its substantial Christian population. This geographic and demographic context adds a layer of tension to the event, as the area has historically been a focal point for interfaith interactions. A manhunt for the remaining perpetrators is currently underway, with security forces sweeping the vicinity to secure the area and locate the suspects. The speed and coordination of the attack suggest a degree of planning, prompting a deeper investigation into the specific motives of the group responsible.

Minister of Government Communications Mohammed Al-Momani stated that security forces are leading the investigation into the attack. He emphasized the ongoing efforts to gather evidence and determine the full scope of the incident. The government’s response has been swift, with high-level officials convening to manage both the security operation and the public communication strategy. The focus is on restoring a sense of safety for the local community while ensuring that justice is pursued rigorously.

King Abdullah II addressed the nation on social media, promising the harshest retaliation against those responsible for the bloodshed. He declared that every Jordanian life is precious and that the state would strike with an iron fist against those who threaten the nation. This strong language underscores the monarchy’s commitment to protecting its citizens and deterring future acts of violence. The royal statement served as a unifying message, reinforcing the government’s resolve to handle the aftermath with both force and compassion.

The international Christian community also reacted quickly to the news. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, the only Christian head of state in the Arab world, condemned the shooting as a heinous terrorist attack. In a statement released by his presidency, Aoun noted that the incident reaffirms that terrorism has no religion or homeland. He argued that the primary aim of such acts is to strike at coexistence and spread strife among neighbors. His comments highlighted the broader regional implications of the attack and the shared vulnerability of Christian communities in the Middle East.

The Karak region has a history of deadly violence, which adds historical weight to the current tragedy. In 2016, gunmen ambushed police in a series of attacks in the area, including at a Crusader castle that attracts tourists. That previous incident resulted in ten deaths, seven of whom were officers, and left dozens wounded. Security forces eventually killed the attackers after a lengthy standoff. The recurrence of violence in this specific area prompts questions about long-term security strategies and the ongoing challenges of maintaining stability in the region.
