The race to capitalize on the artificial intelligence boom continues to reshape the landscape for major tech companies. In a significant development reported by CNBC, OpenAI is reportedly in advanced talks to secure a massive new round of private funding.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the company is working to raise up to $30 billion. This potential capital injection would value OpenAI at $1.25 trillion on a pre-money basis. The round is being led by the investment firm Coatue, with additional participation expected from investors based in the United Arab Emirates.

This latest reporting follows a similar story from Bloomberg published approximately one month ago. That earlier report suggested OpenAI was seeking the same $30 billion in funding but at a higher $1.4 trillion valuation. Both outlets note that the specific terms are still under negotiation, meaning the final numbers could shift before a deal is finalized.

There are indications that this funding round may involve more than just capital. CNBC reports that the investment from UAE-based partners could be tied to a separate agreement designed to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI. This strategic partnership could help address the intense demand for processing power that drives the operation of large language models. OpenAI has declined to comment on the specific details of these negotiations.

If the valuation holds at or above the $1 trillion mark, OpenAI would establish a new record as the most valuable private company in history. This milestone would significantly raise the expectations for the company's upcoming public offering. The firm previously filed confidential paperwork for an initial public offering in June. That filing came shortly after a March funding round that valued the ChatGPT developer at $852 billion on a post-money basis.

The high bar set by OpenAI may also influence the trajectory of its closest competitor, Anthropic. Many industry observers believe Anthropic's public debut is imminent. Recent reports indicate that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its initial public offering. There are rumors circulating that the company could submit its public S-1 filing at any time.

Anthropic has already raised substantial capital in recent months. In May, the company secured $65 billion in funding at a $965 billion valuation. At the time, many in the market viewed this as the final major private round before the company went public. Like OpenAI, Anthropic also filed confidential IPO paperwork in June, signaling its readiness to enter the public markets soon.

The competing valuations of these two leading AI labs highlight the immense confidence investors currently have in the sector. As negotiations proceed, the final figures will provide a clear benchmark for how the market values the leading players in the generative AI space. The outcome of OpenAI's raise will likely serve as a key indicator for the broader tech market's appetite for high-growth AI stocks.
