Maggiano's Little Italy is set to enter the Raleigh market, signaling a significant shift in the local dining landscape. The chain will occupy the former Brio Italian Grille location inside Crabtree Valley Mall. This move marks the second Maggiano's in the Triangle region, following the existing establishment at Streets at Southpoint in Durham. Known for serving large, family-style portions, the new venue has not yet announced a specific opening date.

The arrival of new franchises coincides with heightened prestige for local eateries. During the 2026 Michelin Guide American South ceremony in downtown Nashville, three regional restaurants received Bib Gourmand designations. These honorees include Ajja in Raleigh, the sandwich shop Ideal's in Durham, and Tesoro, an 18-seat pasta-focused venue in Carrboro. Additionally, Prime Barbecue, Mala Pata, and Sam Jones BBQ retained their previous designations. Sixteen other establishments, such as Brewery Bhavana, Poole's, Stanbury, and The Fearrington House Restaurant, kept their Michelin recommended status.

Other national brands are also making their way to the area. Millie's Homemade Ice Cream, a Pittsburgh-based franchise, is planning its first North Carolina location at 325 Blake St. in City Market. The shop will be situated next to Blackbird Books and Coffee, with a target opening before the end of the year. Meanwhile, South Block, known for acai bowls and smoothies with three locations in the Charlotte area, is preparing to open at 4121 Main at North Hills St. in Raleigh. This spot will be adjacent to bartaco, though no opening date has been confirmed.

In the Apex area, Grain & Berry has opened at 2017 Creekside Landing Drive in Beaver Creek Crossings. This marks its second location in North Carolina, following its opening in Holly Springs. In Raleigh, Winston's Grille is celebrating its 40th anniversary, having been founded in 1986 by Wil O'Neal and Charles Winston Jr.

Durham is seeing changes in its culinary offerings as well. M Kikkei, formerly known as M Pocha, will hold an invitation-only soft opening on October 24 and a grand opening on October 29 at 101 E. Chapel Hill St. The restaurant specializes in Nikkei cuisine, a blend of Japanese techniques and Peruvian ingredients, and serves as the seventh concept in the Mpire group. In Pittsboro, a Tavolo Italian Eatery has opened in MOSAIC at Chatham Park. Additionally, Gandy Coffee House is expected to open in early 2027 inside the historic Captain J. F. Alston House at 14 N. Small St. On the other side of the ledger, Sushioki in Research Triangle Park has closed permanently after eight years of operation.

The upcoming event calendar is packed with culinary gatherings. The inaugural Chapel Hill Biscuit Festival is scheduled for Sunday, October 25, at American Legion Post 6. VIP entry begins at 2 p.m., with general admission at 3 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the SECU Family House at UNC Hospitals. On October 29, chefs including Sera Cuni of The Root Cellar will host a Yellowstone Dinner at Holl & Stone Farm in Garner.

Preeti Waas is organizing a Super Spooky Sandwich popup on October 31 from noon to 4 p.m. The menu will be available for pickup on Saturday, October 24, at 202 N. Corcoran St. in Durham. In early November, the Chefs for Change Gala and Auction will take place at The Cookery on November 5, benefiting Families Moving Forward. Botiwalla will also host a Diwali party at Iron Works on November 6.

The third Rawleigh Oyster Fest, themed Smoke and Shuck, is set for November 7 at Raleigh Iron Works. This year's event adds North Carolina pitmasters for the first time. Organizers introduced a $60 Half Shell ticket, which includes nine oysters, two bites, and one drink, in response to feedback from attendees who felt previous prices were high. The previous two editions sold out and raised approximately $12,500 together.

The Trophy Trot 5K returns for its 10th year at Dix Park on Thanksgiving morning, November 26, to benefit Healing Transitions. Nearly 3,000 people signed up last year, and the race donated about $60,000, an increase from the $42,000 raised the prior year. The North Carolina State Fair continues through Sunday. The Food Bank is also marking Tackling Hunger Month, noting that more than 600,000 neighbors are unsure where their next meal will come from, and that every $25 provides 75 meals.
