Barcelona and Real Madrid enter Sunday's meeting with identical records: 106 wins each. A result at Camp Nou would settle which club holds the advantage in a fixture first played in 1902. The match is scheduled for October 25, one day after this report.
El Clasico, Spanish for "The Classic," has featured Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, alongside Neymar Jr, Luis Suarez, David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane. Current squads include Lamine Yamal and Raphinha at Barcelona, and Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr at Real Madrid. The fixture draws millions of viewers globally.
Past editions produced several close results. On April 23, 2017, Barcelona won 3-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu. Casemiro scored first for Real, Messi equalized within five minutes, Ivan Rakitic put Barca ahead after halftime, and Sergio Ramos received a red card for a two-footed lunge on Messi. James Rodriguez tied it in the 85th minute, and Messi scored with the final kick for his 500th Barcelona goal. Real still took the title by three points.
A March 10, 2007 match at Camp Nou ended 3-3. A 19-year-old Messi scored his first career hat-trick after Barcelona were reduced to 10 men. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice for Real and Ramos added a third; Messi equalized in the first minute of stoppage time. Both clubs finished the season on 76 points, with Real taking the title on head-to-head record.
Real won 4-2 at home on April 10, 2005, behind goals from Zidane, Ronaldo Nazario, Raul and Michael Owen, with Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho scoring for Barcelona. Barcelona won the league that year by three points. On May 2, 2009, Barcelona won 6-2 at the Bernabeu, with Henry scoring twice and Messi, Puyol and Pique also finding the net; Barca took the title by nine points.
The Copa del Rey final on April 20, 2011 ended 1-0 to Real in extra time after 90 scoreless minutes. Ronaldo headed in a pass from Angel Di Maria, who was later sent off for a second yellow card. The goal delivered Real its first trophy under Jose Mourinho and its first domestic cup since 1993.
