Jose Mourinho faces the central question of his second stint at Real Madrid on Sunday: can he win at Camp Nou? The Portuguese manager returns to the stadium where he first managed the club in 2010, hoping to end Barcelona's recent dominance and cut their league lead in half.
The stakes are high for the Spanish champions, who currently hold a six-point advantage over their rivals. Barcelona has waited for this fixture to extend that gap to nine points, but their preparation was disrupted by a 4-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday. That loss marked their first of the season and forced Hansi Flick's side to reassess their performance just days before the clash.
Real Madrid enters the match with momentum, having won four consecutive games. A victory would not only shrink the deficit to three points but also break a streak in which they have lost six of the last seven El Clasicos. This is the third El Clasico for Mourinho in his current tenure, and the 63-year-old has previously overseen 17 such matches as Real's head coach.
Flick acknowledged the challenge ahead of the game, describing his team as being in an initial phase of development. He noted that comparing a squad that has only been together for about two months to established teams is unfair. "We have to grow as a team," Flick said. "Tomorrow we play against one of the best teams in the world, so it’s a good opportunity to grow, to challenge ourselves, to improve ourselves and to grow as a team."
Mourinho downplayed recent form, stating that past results do not influence the outcome of this specific rivalry. "El Clasico is unique," he said. "Normally, the football world stops to watch it. Hopefully, it’s a great game and we win." Both managers described the upcoming match as incredible and unique, emphasizing that while it is for three league points, the significance extends far beyond the table.
The match is scheduled for Sunday at Camp Nou. It will be the first meeting between these two managers since their previous encounters in La Liga, with cameras focused on Mourinho's reactions as he navigates the pressure of the rivalry.
