Kylian Mbappe scored 22 goals during the 2026 World Cup in North America, a total that makes him the all-time leading scorer in the tournament's history. He achieved this record in 22 matches, winning the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament. The number places him ahead of Lionel Messi, who has 21 career World Cup goals, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16.

Mbappe will present these numbers as his primary argument ahead of the Ballon d'Or ceremony in London on Monday. The 2025-26 season covered by the award ended without a club or international trophy for the Real Madrid forward. He aims to use his individual statistical dominance to overcome the lack of silverware. The prize carries no cash award, but it significantly affects a player's market value and status.

The striker was the top scorer in both La Liga and the Champions League this season. He netted 25 goals in the Spanish league and 15 in the European competition, leading the scoring charts in both. Mbappe stated that being the top scorer in the biggest competitions supports his claim for the honor. He added that he feels this is a strong year for him personally.

The main weakness in his case is the absence of team victories. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This extends their drought without a major trophy to a second straight season. The team played under managers Xabi Alonso and Alvaro Arbeloa during a turbulent campaign. France also failed to win the World Cup, finishing fourth after losses to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff.

Rival candidates have stronger trophy records. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and the La Liga title with Barcelona. Harry Kane collected three trophies for Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga championship. Mbappe acknowledged this gap but maintained that the award goes to an individual player, not a team. He told RFI that the vote will not reveal a team but a specific person.

History suggests a high bar for winners without major honors. Every Ballon d'Or recipient over the past decade lifted at least one trophy in the award year. Ousmane Dembele won the prize in 2025 after helping Paris Saint-Germain win the Champions League. Rodri won the award two years prior after securing Euro 2024 with Spain and the Premier League with Manchester City.

The last player to win without a major trophy was Cristiano Ronaldo in 2013. He scored 66 goals for club and country while Real Madrid finished as league runners-up. Portugal failed to advance past the playoffs of the 2012 World Cup. This precedent offers a slim path for Mbappe, who has been nominated nine times and placed third in 2023.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has publicly backed Mbappe's bid. He noted that the player who made history this summer is not from Paris Saint-Germain or the Spanish national team. Mbappe remains confident in his position despite the bookmakers not listing him as the favorite.
