U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio publicly invited Cubans seeking change to establish direct lines of communication with the Central Intelligence Agency. The announcement marks the newest escalation in the Trump administration's effort to pressure the communist government in Havana.

On Friday, Rubio posted on X that the current moment is ideal for those wanting to improve conditions in Cuba. He cited the "disappointment of failed promises, corruption, and the privileged lives of only a few" as reasons to act. He specifically urged readers to seize the opportunity to create desired change through a "discrete partnership with the CIA."

The CIA immediately reposted the message and issued a similar appeal in Spanish. The agency attached a video to the posts that detailed the specific steps for contacting the intelligence agency. This direct outreach occurs while Cuba faces intense economic strain under U.S. sanctions and a long-standing embargo.

Daily life on the island has become more difficult as prices for basic goods surge and medical access shrinks. Reports indicate Cubans are waiting hours in lines for bread and queuing for doctor appointments. The economic pressure intensified last week when the U.S. government announced new sanctions targeting Cuba's state-run bank. Washington stated the institution has ties to Iran.

President Donald Trump addressed the situation during a campaign rally in South Florida on Friday. He claimed the U.S. would handle Cuba while returning from the Strait of Hormuz, where Navy warships are currently deployed. "Those beautiful ships will pass Cuba," Trump said. He described a plan where one ship would stop about 50 yards off the coast. The crew would raise their hands, and he would send Rubio to "finish up the deal."

Cuba's Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, responded to the remarks on X on Friday. He rejected threats arising from U.S. ambitions toward the island. He noted that while the coastline features beautiful beaches, it is also rugged and inhospitable to those arriving with hostile intentions and a desire for domination.
