The relationship between the Duchess of Sussex and her estranged father has taken a sharp turn following new allegations regarding the possession of child sexual abuse images. Meghan Markle has described the situation as deeply distressing, marking a significant moment in the long standing distance between the royal and her family of origin.

The central claim in this developing story is that the Metropolitan Police in London were aware of disturbing allegations against Thomas Markle Sr as early as 2018. Through a spokesperson, Meghan stated that a letter sent to the Met and its Royalty and Specialist Protection unit was later shared with her. She explained that this document contained troubling accusations and that she was assured an investigation was underway. This revelation suggests that the family was on notice nearly eight years before the current media frenzy broke.

Meghan emphasized that her decision to limit contact with her father and to prevent him from meeting her children was driven by a single purpose: protection. She expressed trust that authorities were acting in the same manner for other families and stated her hope that justice will be fully served while children's safety remains the primary focus. According to sources, she was unable to speak publicly in 2018 because doing so could have jeopardized any future legal proceedings or exposed her to lawsuits. The police unit reportedly passed the letter to her shortly after her wedding, although the force has not previously investigated Markle Sr and is not currently doing so. The Met is now conducting internal inquiries to confirm if officers were involved in sharing the document.

The allegations were brought to wider attention after the Sun newspaper reported that Thomas Markle Jr, Meghan's half-brother, claimed to have found a large stash of images at his father's former home in the Philippines. Markle Jr told detectives that he discovered hundreds, if not thousands, of such images on computers and mobile phones stored in four large boxes in Cebu. The FBI has stated it will support Philippine authorities and investigate any related federal violations of US law.

Philippine officials have confirmed that the matter is under active investigation. Nicholas Ty, an undersecretary at the justice department, noted that a local taskforce is handling the case. Interior secretary Jonvic Remulla added that national police have secured Markle Sr's computer for a full digital forensic examination. He expects results within approximately one week.

Thomas Markle Sr has denied the claims, calling them sick lies. Speaking from a rehabilitation center in Florida, where he is learning to walk with a prosthetic limb after an amputation, he described himself as shocked and hurt. He argued that he could never have committed the acts he is accused of and noted that the computers had not been in his possession since he moved to the Philippines in January 2025 for a fresh start following a stroke.

Family dynamics continue to complicate the narrative. Meghan's half-sister, Samantha Markle, defended her father by accusing Markle Jr of fabricating lies for financial gain. She alleged that the claims emerged shortly after their father cut off his funding and highlighted that the computers were out of his possession for two years, leaving room for tampering.

The estrangement between Meghan and her father dates back to when he missed her wedding to Prince Harry on health grounds. He has never met his grandchildren, Prince Archie, who is seven, and Princess Lilibet, who is five. The current legal and forensic processes will likely determine the next steps for the family's public and private relationships.

Open questions remain regarding the internal Met inquiries and the specific findings of the digital forensics in the Philippines. Until those results are finalized, the family's narrative will likely remain in flux, with each party holding firm to their version of events.
