As polls closed across Texas at 7 p.m. on Nov. 3, early voting data indicated a lead for Democratic state Rep. Gina Hinojosa over Republican incumbent Greg Abbott for governor.

According to secretary of state figures covering 6% of reporting precincts, Hinojosa captured 55% of the early vote. Abbott held 44% of the tally, while Libertarian Pat Dixon received 1%.

Hinojosa, a representative from Austin, is seeking to become the state's first Latina governor. She is also aiming to be the first Democrat to hold the top executive office in Texas in more than three decades.

In the concurrent race for lieutenant governor, early results showed Democratic state Rep. Vikki Goodwin leading Republican incumbent Dan Patrick. Goodwin, also from Austin, held 53% of the early vote compared to Patrick's 45%.

Libertarian Anthony Cristo and Green Party candidate Kevin McCormick each secured 1% of the early lieutenant governor vote. Patrick is seeking a fourth term as president of the Texas Senate.

Republicans currently occupy all statewide offices in Texas. Election records indicate that no Democrat or third-party candidate has won a statewide position in the state since 1994.
