Democratic candidate Scott Peters holds a lead of 39,996 votes in California's 50th Congressional District. That margin, according to unofficial returns, puts him ahead of Republican challenger Steve Cohen by 22.2 percentage points.
The race for the 50th District covers Coronado, Poway, and Santee, along with parts of Escondido and San Diego. It also includes communities such as Del Dios, Harmony Grove, and most of Ramona. Peters currently has 107,567 votes, while Cohen has 68,571.
In the neighboring 49th District, Democratic incumbent Mike Levin leads Republican Armen Kurdian. Levin has 93,249 votes compared to Kurdian's 61,335. The 49th District includes Carlsbad, Del Mar, Encinitas, and Solana Beach. It also covers parts of Oceanside and San Diego, as well as San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano in Orange County.
The third race involves the open 48th District seat previously held by Republican Darrell Issa. Democrat Marni von Wilpert leads Republican Jim Desmond in this contest. Von Wilpert has 84,030 votes, which is 59.4% of the total, while Desmond has 57,442 votes, or 40.6%. The 48th District spans San Marcos, Vista, Hemet, Indian Wells, Palm Springs, and Temecula, plus unincorporated areas like Borrego Springs and Lake San Marcos.
These results were released by the California Secretary of State on Tuesday, November 3, at 8:15 p.m. Pacific Time. The figures represent districtwide tallies for the three congressional districts serving North County. Each district elects one representative to serve a two-year term in the U.S. House.
The election determines who will vote on federal laws, spending, and executive branch oversight for these regions. All three leading candidates are Democrats facing Republican opponents. The next step is for the Secretary of State to finalize the certification of results for each district.
