Jon Ossoff won reelection as Georgia's U.S. senator on Tuesday, according to AP projections. He defeated Mike Collins, a Republican representative backed by President Donald Trump. The result moves the Democratic Party closer to controlling the Senate.
Ossoff held his seat in a state where Trump carried the presidential race by two percentage points in 2024. The contest was among the most competitive in the nation. Josh Shapiro, the Democratic governor of Pennsylvania, was also declared the winner of his reelection bid. He is considered a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election.
Roy Cooper is expected to win the U.S. Senate seat in North Carolina. If the projection holds, he would deliver the first Senate seat for Democrats in that state since 2008. His opponent, Michael Whatley, is a Republican.
Democratic candidates are projected to retain additional seats in the northeast. Juliana Stratton, the lieutenant governor of Illinois, is expected to defeat Don Tracy to succeed Dick Durbin, who is retiring. Cory Booker is set to win a third term in New Jersey after beating Justin Murphy.
Ed Markey is projected to defeat John Deaton in Massachusetts. Markey survived a primary challenge earlier this year. Jack Reed is expected to secure a sixth term in Rhode Island, and Chris Coons is projected to beat Michael Katz in Delaware.
